Libaro ran to catch up with Eliza as she headed into a side street that would take her into the very heart of the Vatican.

“We’ll never get past the Swiss Guards,” Libaro pointed out.

She stopped. He was right. She hadn’t been thinking about that. All she’d been able to focus on was that she finally knew where the tall Italian, Conti, might be.

Frustrated, she turned to him, “But they could flee at any moment.”

Libaro rubbed the dark stubble on his chin before he said, “I don’t know about Conti, but I’m sure Abruzzo and Russo will stay put. If they leave, Interpol will find them, yes? And they probably think they’re well protected inside the Vatican.”

Eliza considered his words. He was right about Abruzzo and Russo. But if Conti actually was the tall Italian, he would be extremely cautious and very clever. Without doubt, he would have all sorts of contingency plans and escape options lined up. She cursed. He was the one she truly wanted.

If only she had more resources. If only she could access the assistance of the Soldiers of God. She clenched her fists in anger at the Order’s stupidity. There was nothing she could do. Feeling defeated, her shoulders slumped and she looked at Libaro. They would just have to do it on their own.

She said, “We need to find Conti. We must get into the Diplomatic Corp as soon as possible. We can pump Abruzzo and Russo for information if we find them, but Conti is essential.”

“I bet they know where Conti is,” Libaro mused. “We can get into the Diplomatic Corp with some help from my friends,” he said, “but you’ll have to get us past the Swiss Guards in the first place.”

She nodded in agreement and followed Libaro back toward the heart of Rome.

Soon, they entered a side street in Travastere and descended down cobbled steps into what looked like a costume shop. An extremely fat woman sat at a counter, knitting.

“Ahhh, Pietro!” She exclaimed gleefully.

A round of exuberant kisses and greetings ensued before Libaro could explain what they wanted. Shortly afterward, they left the shop. Libaro wore the robes of a monk from a remote Carthusian Monastery in Lucca, while Eliza was dressed as a Nun from the same order. Without papers, they wouldn’t be able to get past the Swiss Guards, but at least in their outfits, if they got inside, they wouldn’t be questioned.

Eliza ran through various scenarios in her mind to breach Vatican security before it suddenly came to her. It was very simple really.

She turned to him and said, “I know a way.”
